This gold medal was awarded on August 16th, 1894 by the League Of American Wheelmen at the annual meet held in Denver, Colorado. It was the 1/2 MILE Championship Race won by Eddy C. Bald. The diameter of the medal is 1-13/16 Inches. The highlighted areas are cast and/or engraved into the Medal. Bald started bicycle racing in 1892 at the age of 18 but showed little promise until August of 1893 when he competed in nine races at Troy, New York. He won all the events in which he competed. While at Troy he joined the important COLUMBIA bicycle racing team. He was a continuous winner of virtually every race he entered. The record that he set for winning this Medal stood for 3 more years until defeated by Marshall "Major" Taylor. |
