| 1938 Claud Butler Continental Classique Club/Racer Bike-Neil Foddering |
|
| This 1938 Claud Butler Continental Classique Club/Racer Bike photo was gleaned from the photo bucket of Neil Foddering, of England who has given me permission to post his bikes onto this web site. Neil says that; (1) this is the original paint, (2) the right crank is a BSA while the left crank is a Williams (the BSA was most likely a replacement in later years), (3) the rear derailleur is a 1930`s Simplex Champion du Monde 3-speed with a top tube lever shifter, and (4) this bike still rides beautifully and he uses it from time to time. See the 1939 catalog page on this model in the picture gallery. Neil reminded me that a Club/Racer model bike was usually a multi-purpose bike for the owner at the time, he/she would use it for commuting to work, club rides, touring and racing. Club/Racer was a definite category in the British bike industry. Neil has a (now-reduced) collection of around 14 lightweights dating from the 1920s, some on the road, and some awaiting rebuilding. He only collect machines which he plans to use. Neil said; `I keep intending to photograph them all, but keep finding other things to do!`| Picture Gallery for this Item (click images to enlarge) |
