| Howie`s father had a business relationship with Paul Porter who was the owner of Merry Sales in the 1950`s. I recall listening to phone conversations between Paul & my dad. Paul started with the company as an employee when he was a young man.

Merry Sales is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, bicycle parts & accessories distributors in the USA.
The company got its name from its original owner Edwin F. Merry. He opened his business in 1906 after the big earthquake. Back then they were selling automobile parts and motorcycle parts as well. In 1936 the Merry Co. merged with the Bean Son Co, another bicycle wholesaler, to form the Merry-Bean Company.
The onset of WWII caused a drastic slowdown of bicycle production. In 1942 the Merry-Bean corporation was dissolved. Paul Porter, the company`s manager (who started out with the company as bike messenger/delivery person) became the sole owner of the bicycle parts division. He renamed it The Merry Sales Co. The business was taken over by Paul`s son, John Porter who handed the reins over to his son, Jim Porter, the current manager (third generation bikeman). The company specializes in stocking a very wide variety of accessories and component parts and gives splendid service to the bicycle dealers with whom they do business.
