This was a big success for the Raleigh Team. The winning team members were (1) Didi Thurau, best young rider and five stage wins, (2) Hennie Kuiper, 2nd overall and one stage win, and (3) Gerrie Kintemann, two stage wins. The complete team roster was; the three above mentioned plus Jose de Cauwer, Gerben Karstens, Piet van Katwijk, Henk Lubberding, Bill Nickson, Bert Pronk and Aad van den Hoek. A little history; Raleigh was acquired by T.I. (Tube Investments). They had a subsidary in Boston, Mass; Raleigh Industries of America, president-Mr. Osgood, GM-Bill Quigley, warehouse manager-Frank Callahan. Howie visited their facility as starting in 1960 he was responsible for purchasing the products that they supplied to WCCSC (Sturmey Archer hubs and parts, Benelux derailleurs and parts, Cyclo freewheels and cogs, Brooks saddles and bags, and many other parts and accessories. WCCSC also purchased complete bicycles from Raleigh Industries-Nottingham under the brand names of Meteor and Royal Scot which we distributed to dealers in CA, AZ, NV, OR and WA. Herb Gold (formerly of the Merry Company) was our sales manager at the time. More history about Raleigh-Nottingham; Mr. G.H.B `George` Wilson (aka Mr. Bicycle) joined Raleigh (Sturmey) in 1927 and became managing director in 1938. He was succeeded Mr. L.L. Roberts, with whom my father did business starting in the late 1950`s.
