| This 1980 Schwinn 20 inch wheel coaster-brake Fair Lady (serial number MR841044) belongs to Luke DeNitto of CA in Sept-2010. Luke is in the process of restoring this bike while changing it from a coaster brake model to a derailleur gear multi-speed bike. This is a work in process so additional photos will be added as Luke sends them. There are several other bikes belonging to Luke DeNitto posted in this category of this web site. Luke has been very generous sharing his time & expertise with other collectors. Here is Luke`s story: A few weeks ago, I came across a $40.00 garage sale Pink Fairlady identical to the one my 9 year old daughter rides, and thought.....I should convert this rusty wheel single speed bike to a 5 speed.
So off I went to my local Bike store and purchased 2 aluminum rimmed 20` wheels with the rear wheel having the threads for a freewheel.
I made a spreader tool that precisely widened the rear of the frame by a 1/2 inch on each side and the new aluminum rear wheel fit right in. I then found several Schwinn NOS five speed lever shifters and installed one on the head tube. You might say...`hey Luke...no coaster brake means no brakes at all, because this frame won`t support caliper brakes`. Well this one is going to be fenderless to accomplish this task so look at the aluminum adapter I turned out on the lathe to hang the front caliper. I am going to make a a rear aluminum mount that mounts to the fender bracket on the frame that will follow the contours of the frame perfectly and mount the rear brake so it looks as natural as the front. Throw on a Schwinn Derailleur and walla..the conversion is complete with front and rear brakes. This conversion uses all Schwinn parts with the exception of my two fabricated brake frame mounts. I think I can make this a kit and it just might spark an interest in those single speed Stingrays that collectors only use as parts bikes for the factory 5 speeds.

This is a photo of the bike upside down showing Luke's caliper brake adapter on the underside of the Ashtabula fork. This photo shows the front side-pull caliper brake facing forward. Luke has designed and produced an ingenious manner for attaching a front caliper brake to a fork which was not originally designed for such. If you need an adapter like this, contact me & I will ask Luke to make contact with you. |
