Thanks to Swiss/Tex friend Andre Bohren and Doug Shapiro for sending this information, which I paraphrased. Additional information available at www.wikipedia.org, or Google Doug Shapiro, or contact Doug through his web site www.bicycleexpertwitness.com:
Unlike many American cyclists Doug was very fortunate to spend a lot of time racing in Europe as a Junior with stellar results and because of that the Europeans knew who Doug Shapiro was. When Doug became a Senior he continued to spend time racing in Europe with the US Team. His race results were once again excellent. Doug had chartered new territory for American`s in Italy, France and Belgium - he made a name for himself. His success showed other Americans that it was possible to beat the Europeans and success started to happen quickly for other Americans. In fact, in April 2010 the International Cycling Museum in Belgium is going to induct Doug as a Pioneer of Contemporary American Cycling.
Jock Boyer (Jonathan `Jacques` Boyer), was the first American to compete in the Tour de France, followed by Greg Lemond and then Doug Shapiro. Doug was the 3rd American to ever compete and finish the Tour. In 1985 there were only 2 American`s that competed in the Tour, that being Greg and Doug. Doug was recruited to the Kwantum team in 1985 because he won the 1984 Coors Classic and beat all the best Amateurs from around the world. His climbing and sprinting skills impressed them and as a result Kwantum hired him to be Joop`s personal domestic in his last Tour (Heindrick Gerardus Jozef Zoetemelk); Joop finished 13th and I finished 74th. Had Doug not been a domestic he most likely would have finished in the top 10 -15. In 1985 the Kwantum team was ranked 2nd or 3rd in the world. It was a wonderful experience for Doug.
Doug competed on two USA Olympic Teams (1980 & 1984). He earned the nickname of `bullet` due to his ability and reputation as a good hill climber & sprinter. As of 2010 Doug is still active in the cycling community; for the past 20 years he has been and  continues to be a consultant and expert witness in cases involving bicycle accident litigation.
