c.1940 `Bicycle Built for Two` by Jim and Elisabeth Young (Original, not a reprint) |
|---|
Published by Binfords & Mort of Portland, OR. Consists of 167 delightful pages with lots of humor and vivid descriptions of mountain and desert scenery. Particularly delightful are the many little anecdotes of human nature as seen from the saddles of a tandem; illustrated with photographs. This book has a paper dust jacket and also a cut-out article from the 1939 issue of `Mechanix Illustrated` with a photo (taken at the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate Bridge) of the two authors with written text about their 7,100 mile travel. They purchased the English tandem from Ernest Ohrt of San Francisco. Ernie Ohrt and his brother Hans Ohrt were bike racers as youths and lightweight cycling advocates in their bicycle industry business careers. The dimensions are 5 1/2 x 8 inches, the condition is near mint (except the paper dust jacket is a little worn). This is an image of the outside front of the dust jacket. See the picture gallery. As a side note; it is interesting that I have a c.1934 English tandem in my collection that appears to be the same frame as the Young`s SPIRIT OF FUN. My tandem bears the name Dragenham Cycles and John Hill, the proprietor. Dagenham is a suburb of East London. I believe the frame was produced by Royal Enfield a bicycle manufacturer in Redditch, England (a town nearby Birmingham). [BookAntq-B-1940a]
