Maurice `Frenchy` Gilles (1911-2003) |

He got his nickname `Frenchy`because of his French accent; he was born in France and came to America at age 23. He raced bicycles during the years of about 1933-1937. Maurice partnered with Oscar Juner in some of the 6-day events in Chicago. One of his racing bikes was made by Oscar Wystan. One of Maurice`s daughters, Marcia, lives in Howie`s neighborhood; Marcia gave Howie this information. This image is of Maurice on the rollers with Noah Van Cleef of the Cycle Trades Association of America holding him for the photo. Maurice had recently won the American Roller Racing Championships.
