1898 Crescent Bicycles Catalog, Western Wheel Works, Chicago (Original, not a reprint)
A PROFESSIONALLY REPRODUCED REPRINT AVAILABLE TO SELL! Crescent brand bicycles were manufactured by the Western Wheel Works of Chicago, IL. This is their 48 page catalog for the 1898 season. Officers of the company at the time were R. Lindsay Coleman, Pres., Otto Unzicker, V.P., and L. Scheffler, Secy & Treas. The front cover bears a rubber stamp with a selling agent; the Brunner and Co, 199 Pearl St., Hartford, Conn. The centerfold contains pictures of the interior & exterior of the Chicago factory and lists some interesting information: (1) the largest single shipment-3,622 Crescents, (2) the largest daily output-750 finished bicycles in 10 hours, (3) the largest yearly sales-over 83,000 Crescents sold in 1897, (4) the only solid bicycle train-15 carloads. Several pages are devoted to text & illustrations featuring the construction of their frames, forks and component parts, with splendid illustrations of many components, including the chainless mechanism and the Crescent unique crank system. Eleven (11) different bicycles (adult and juvenile, 20, 24, 26 & 28 inch diameter wheels) are illustrated and detailed specifications are listed. Additionally two (2) tandems are included.
It is convenient to possess a quality reproduction catalog at a reasonable cost whether or not you own an “original” or until such time that you are able to acquire an `original`. With a reproduction you can handle the pages and read the text without the worry of damaging or degrading an “original”. The reference material herein is a good addition to any Vintage Bicycle Collector’s library. The dimensions of the original, which is in good condition, are 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches, the reproduction measures 5 3/8 x 7 3/8 inches. [CatAntqBike-C-023]
