2000 August 25, 11th ICHC (International Cycle History Conference), Shimano`s Dinner Party |
---|
This photo was taken at the Shimano hosted Dinner Party held on August 25, 2000, the closing evening of the Conference. L-R: Ken Fujimura (Shimano), Howie Cohen, Kay Cohen, Akiko Shimano (Yoshi`s wife) & Yoshi Shimano. Kay & Howie were in Japan for the 11th ICHC (International Cycle History Conference) which was graciously hosted by Shimano at their Sakai headquarters. The Shimano company hosted our group very lavishly. They supplied us with rooms for our meetings, audio & visual equipment for our presentations, a lovely buffet lunch every day for the three days, a tour of portions of the factory, a tour of the new Shimano Museum, a gala dinner party on August 25th, and more. Ken Fujimura (an old friend of Howie`s) of Shimano Co.was always in the background to make certain that all of our needs and desires were met. Mike Sumita (another old friend of Howie`s) stopped by for a greeting. Natsukashi desu!

Liberation by Bike, Millennium 1999, British Stamp, 26p Value |
---|
This is a block of 4 of the stamp that was issued on February 2,1999 by the British Royal Mail, together with three other stamps, all of which are part of the 4-stamp series acknowledging that `travel` has played an important part in society. Designer of the bicycle stamp was Sara Fanelli. The souvenir cover text mentions; . . .Although not on the scale of the locomotives and steamships, the bicycle offered individuals a new independence. Bicycling boomed following the development by John Starley of the modern safety bicycle in 1885. Don Albone invented the first popular bike for the `skirted rider` the following year and a woman atop her cycle became a powerful symbol of female emancipation. Cycles, as did cars, transformed travel within Britain, creating new possibilities for mobility and a world of speed and individual freedom that contributed to a powerful sense of change. In 1895 the publication `Lady Cyclist` was launched with the announcement that it had a mission entirely its own, and the network of cycling clubs that spread across the country was documented monthly. With the aforementioned background it is easy to understand why the bike in the stamp has a skirt guard and a female flying above while holding onto the handlebar grips. The four stamps in the series have individual numbers; (1) the 63p value is #41 and illustrates Capt. Cook and the tattooed face of a Moori, (2) the 43p value is #42 and illustrates a steamship, train wheelbarrow and walking, (3) the 26p value is #43 and illustrates the bicycle, and (4) the 20p value is #44 and illustrates the airplane embracing the globe. The souvenir brochure illustrates a person on a High Wheel which has a globe for the big wheel with an airplane zooming around the wheel. [Phil-UK 1999F]
