No.160 New Departure `Bikes Help Build Bombers` - Original c.1940`s Early |

This is one of the original posters that New Departure sent to Bike Shops for POP`s (point of purchase display). The dimensions are 16 x 25 inches. The text on the poster is; `Grim about the war emergency, Consolidated Aircraft is wasting no time. To speed up production on their bombers-many to see service in the East Indies-a corps of 400 bicycles is used by workers and foremen for job-to-job transportation in the huge outdoor assembly plant. So essential is the faultless operation of these bicycles that Consolidated particulary specified new Departure Coaster Brakes-for each of the 400. To men of the industry, New Departure, the most powerful, yet lightest weight coaster brake, is the perfect equipment for the 34 lb. war-time bicycle. Howie`s note: The photo illustrates 3 bikes; 2 are Schwinn balloon tire models and the inside one is a thin tire model with a tubular fork, indicating that it probably is an imported bike. All the bikes have baskets, probably Wald or Washburn. The seat on the outside bike appears to be a Persons double coil spring model. I have some of these undercarriages in the collection; they were rationed and my father (Leo Sr.) managed to obtain two wooden cases of them. During these early years of the 1940`s complete bikes were difficult to obtain; many times the bike in the carton that was delivered to the bike shop was missing a seat, chain, pedals, handlebar and a note was attached explaining that the war required these parts to be used for the war effort. After the WW-II, bicycles continued to be used as the perfered mode of transportation in many large factories, movie studios, etc. I recall that our bike shop, Playrite, sold and serviced many bikes to such facilities, as did Phil`s Bike Shop in Hawthorne, CA., owned by Jim Wedworth and his wife (Jim was also the mayor of the city of Hawthorne). It was, and still is very common for bike shops to be managed by husband and wife teams. [Poster-N.300-160]
