This is the memorial card that was distributed at Dave Staub`s Memorial Service in July 2003. Howie was associated with Dave for many years through bicycle racing events and bicycle industry functions. Dave was respected and liked by the entire bicycle community. His career included racing, working for Schwinn and having his own retail bicycle store in Brea, CA. Dave authored his story IN THE DRAFT OF GIANTS which he lived to see published in Asphalt Magazine. See the reverse side of this memorial card under #01 in the picture gallery. [Staub, Dave]

Harry Reynolds - Irish Bike Racer (1874-1940) |

On August 15, 1896, Irish bike racer Harry Reynolds (aka The Balbriggan Flyer) won the world cycling track championship in Copenhagen, Denmark defeating Schrader of Denmark and Gillaumet of France by the narrowest of margins. Reynolds was stepping onto the podium to be presented with his medal by the King of Denmark when the band started playing `God Save the Queen` as a Union Jack was hoisted alongside the podium. Reynolds threw down his bike in anger, called the officials, pointing out that he was Irish and would not have his victory accredited to England. At his request, the Danes lowered the Union Jack, replacing it with a green flag and the band played an Irish song. Reynolds was born December 14, 1874, passed on July 16, 1940. [Reynolds, Harry]

Phillippe Renoux-French Professional Racer |

Phillippe Renoux was born in France in 1960. He started cycle racing in 1975 as a junior where he finished in the top five in the first few races in which he competed. He rode with club A.C.Baignes-Barbezieux in 1983 & 1984. He claims 46 total victories in his career. My Swiss/Tex friend purchased some jerseys and racing memorabilia from Phillippe and kindly passed some if it to me; see the picture gallery. This framed photo shows Phillippe at the start of a European race (wearing the Bouriaud cap) and there is ASPTT printed on both sleeves of his jersey. [Renoux, Phillippe]

W.C. Sanger |

At the 1896 Springfield Bicycle Meet, a 2-day event that took place in Springfield, MA, Sanger captured 3rd in the One-Mile Record Professional event (which was held on September 3, 1896). Sanger was one of the `hot` racing men of the late 1800`s. He competed with other `crackers` at the August 22, 1894 National Cycle Meet in Kansas City, MO put on by the Kansas City Athletic Club. A few of the competitors who had raced in Denver-Pueblo, CO, and were on their way back to the east coast, stopped to race in Kansas City (glad to have a rest after a long 36-hour dusty trip across the plains).
